In Alaska, you are required to hold auto insurance if you have a car
registered in your name. In addition, if you are on the road driving
someone else’s car, you must have Alaska auto insurance (or insurance
from your home state if Alaska is not your permanent residence). There
is no real limit as to how much Alaska auto insurance you can buy, but
the state does set minimums as follows:
- Bodily Injury per Person: $50,000
- Bodily Injury per Accident: $100,000
This can be shorted to 50/100/25, and if you’re familiar with insurance
in other states, you’ll notice that these amounts are fairly high.
Alaska auto insurance is so high because the weather conditions often
cause accidents in this state.
