Red lights are found at many Alaska intersections. If you run a red
light in this state, you can be cited for violating traffic law under
Alaska’s negligent driver law. Negligent driving is a lesser charge
than reckless driving.
You can get an Alaska red light ticket not only if you run a red light,
but also if you speed up to beat a yellow light. You must also obey “no
turn on red” laws, but if you are in the intersection already when the
light changes, you can continue through the intersection so that you
aren’t dangerously blocking traffic.
Red Light Cameras
Currently, there are no Alaska intersection cameras. However, state
legislators are continually reviewing the need for cameras to prevent
accidents. Some states have outlawed intersection cameras, saying that
they are unconstitutional, but an Alaska red light camera is not
currently illegal. They may come to the state soon if intersections
continue to cause problems for drivers.
